(Yes, it's early. I used chocolate milk.) ;)

On the anniversary of your birth,
I'd like to thank you for Middle-earth,
For the rivers, plains and mountains of fire,
But most of all – thanks for The Shire.

The woods and fields and little streams,
The beech trees talking in their dreams,
Cosy homes with big round doors,
You made them ours, these tales of yours.

Thanks for making hobbits like us,
Quiet shy folk, who don't want a fuss,
Thanks for making us loyal and true,
Oh and thanks for the ale and pipeweed too.

For making us lively and full of tricks
And not much taller than three foot six,
For sturdy feet and woolly pates,
Second breakfast and filled up plates.

You found a place, peaceful and calm,
And filled it with wonder, magic and charm,
Although a professor, learned and wise,
You shared the world you saw through your eyes.

On hobbits' birthdays, we give things away,
And it's clear that you celebrate in the same way.
You gave us a gift more precious than gold,
A wonderful dream that will never grow old.

Have a good day, friends.

Again and always, thank you.

I'm about 2.5K into the next part of ELF FEELINGS, so obviously it was time to take a moment and tell you some of my thoughts about dwarves.

(I am failing really hard in my TOLKIEN thing. This should go with THE RETURN JOURNEY or maybe when I get to the appendices at the end of LotR, but WHATEVER. So much for being linear!)

So!

Thranduil is kind of a jerk in the movies, and I’m totally fine with that. I know his backstory and I can understand it.

I’m kind of curious about Dain, though. In the movie, he refuses to help (even though the geography of that meeting makes, like, ZERO sense), and since Thorin is something of a grudge holder, I’m wondering how that’ll play out.

Because Dain is kind of awesome. )

So I’m kind of curious to see what Billy Connolly and the writing team do.

The Southern Gothic remix of Galadriel's part of the Silmarillion you never knew you needed.

Seriously.

Just when I think [livejournal.com profile] penknife has done it all, she knocks my socks off with something new.

This week on the blog, I talk about the various ways people communicate in fiction (and how it differs from genre to genre).

Looking Out The Window

(And also I make jokes about the Elves. Because that's how we roll in the Shire.)

So apparently [livejournal.com profile] emmy_roo's facebook friends decided that there should be Hobbit ice cream flavours. I cannot say I disagree.

My favourites include "You Shall Not Passionfruit" and "Root Boromir. For Root Boromir Floats", but there are many, many others that made me laugh very hard.

(OMG, I forgot about "They Have Agave Troll")

Hobbit Ice Cream Flavours (not made of actual Hobbits)

I kind of want to make the Mines of S'Moria. I'm not sure I want to know what goes into Radagast the Brownie.

Every now and then, there's a fanvid that isn't technically perfect, isn't made with the best quality of shots, is kind of a cracked-out idea, and yet, somehow, is STILL AMAZING.

Part of that is the fact that the clip choices are all exactly perfect. Part of that is the fact that I adore the song. Part of that is that Éomer is just REALLY ATTRACTIVE, OKAY?

Mostly, though, it's just fun.

Because it should be ridiculous. And somehow it comes all the way back to profound.

So way back in the LotR heyday, Ain't It Cool News did a contest where you had to build a Balrog out of marshmallows, light it on fire and take a picture. The original post (ie. the first hit when you google "marshmallow balrog") does not have the photos anymore (just the text). Does anyone know where I might find them?

Ten Years

Ten years ago, it was a Wednesday. And my life changed forever.

I have SO MANY THOUGHTS, you guys. SO MANY. I may be back to say something profound later.

(In an amusing coincidence, Mark Reads starts Fellowship today. The list of "things he knows" is somewhat funnier than usual.)

This is comment fic I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] thebeecharmer when she was having a bad day.

It's a short piece featuring Boromir and Pippin sometime in "The Ring Goes South" before it starts to snow too badly.

You can find it here.

AN: While in a bed and breakfast in Edinburgh, Rachel suggested that we should do flash fic. She then became rather angry, because both Amy and I wrote something that could almost be considered a story, instead of just cranking out something as crack-ish as possible. This one actually is Amy’s fault, as she is the one who gave me the prompts. (Amy's story is here)

Please keep in mind that I wrote this in approximately five minutes.

For: [livejournal.com profile] eldanna, who got me in; [livejournal.com profile] shirebound, who keeps me going, [livejournal.com profile] marigoldg who is generally awesome, and EVERYONE ELSE because it's Christmas.

AN: I wrote this on the plane on the way home for Christmas. It just kind of appeared on the page. I love it when that happens. I’ve never tried writing Sam before. I don’t think it’s half bad.

This, in a dramatic break with tradition, is entirely bookverse.
