(Aside: this might be my favourite summary of a book I've ever written!)
"Daughter of Smoke and Bone" is kind of like the TARDIS.
First you're all "Hey! It's bigger on the inside!"
And then you're all "HOLY CRAP THERE'S A SWIMMING POOL IN HERE!"
I was, as the saying goes, unprepared.
I think the coolest thing about this book was that it just kept going. Every time I thought I had it figured out, it would do something BEYOND COOL, and I would be completely taken with the story again. It starts off so simply, and becomes this massive, complicated thing that I can't even really describe without spoiling it for you, which I kind of refuse to do.
I just...guh. This book is exactly how you write forbidden romance. There was so little moping! It was refreshing. Karou was a self-rescuing machine. Madrigal rescued the boy by using her brain. Brimstone was adorable. Zuzana cracked me up. Akiva wasn't annoying. The back story was heartbreaking. The description nearly killed me. AND THEN THE ENDING!
I have a bit of a wish kink. I love the twistedness of wishes, the caution and fear. So having them be used as currency was pretty much catnip for me. :)
I loved, loved that this book was set predominantly not in North America. Don't get me wrong, I love home, but there's just something about Prague that was PERFECT for this story, and I'm glad it went there (literally!).
I spent quite a large portion of the book yelling "YES, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE TEETH?" because I wanted to know, and then it was WAY BETTER than I could have EVER IMAGINED and that is ALL I AM SAYING because: AWESOME.
I have SO MANY OTHER THINGS to say about this book, but you really should just read it. It's amazing.
I kind of want to dress up as Madrigal for Hallowe'en, but I don't know if anyone would get it...)
10/10 for the sheer power of awesome, for not being overblown and for the ending (HOLY GOD, THE ENDING!)
